For Park Dental Research, 2014 was one of those moments. 

That year, the company added CT scanning services and 3D printers to its lineup. On paper, that sounds like a technology upgrade. In reality, it was much more important. It was the point when Park Dental Research began expanding beyond traditional implant manufacturing and into the digital dentistry and additive-manufacturing future. 

The aligner manufacturing, treatment-planning software, JUELL™ 3D printing line, printable materials, and direct-print workflows that would later become central to the company all trace back to this infrastructure decision. 

This was not just about adding machines. It was about changing what the company could build. 

A capability, not a product launch 

It is worth being precise about what the 2014 milestone was and what it was not. 

It was not the launch of one specific device. It was not, by itself, an FDA-cleared product milestone. It was an infrastructure shift: Park Dental Research brought CT scanning and 3D printing into its own workflow as core capabilities rather than treating them as outside services or disconnected technologies. 

That distinction matters. 

A company can buy a printer and still remain an analog manufacturer. A company can offer scanning and still rely on old production logic. But when digital capture, digital planning, and additive manufacturing become part of the same internal foundation, the company starts operating differently. 

That is what happened in 2014. Park Dental Research was not simply adding tools. It was building the manufacturing base that would later support clear aligner production, Orchestrate 3D™, JUELL™ 3D, and the direct-print systems that followed. 

The cleared digital products associated with that transformation came later. The foundation came first. 

Why Park Dental Research was ready for the shift 

Many dental companies began adopting digital technology in the 2010s. What made Park Dental Research different was that it was not entering the field cold. 

The leadership behind the company’s digital expansion carried a real history in CT scanning and 3D-model production. Before Park Dental Research made this move, that leadership had been connected to IMTEC Corporation and IMTEC Imaging, a joint venture with Hytec that was tied to FlashCT, a high-speed industrial computed tomography system. 

That history matters because FlashCT was not a side story in dental technology. It was part of one of the earliest major uses of high-speed CT scanning in aligner manufacturing. Beginning in the early 2000s, the technology was used to scan dental impressions directly and create accurate 3D models, helping remove the plaster-model step from large-scale aligner production. 

Park Dental Research did not invent FlashCT. FlashCT belonged to the IMTEC Imaging and Hytec lineage. But the knowledge behind that lineage helped shape the company’s digital direction. 

That is the point of the 2014 milestone. Park Dental Research was not simply chasing a trend. It was bringing a proven understanding of CT scanning, 3D modeling, and digital manufacturing into its own operation. 

There is a difference between adopting a technology and knowing what to do with it. 

What CT scanning and 3D printing actually changed 

To understand why this mattered, it helps to look at the older workflow. 

For decades, dental appliance manufacturing depended on physical intermediaries: impressions, poured models, manual fabrication, and repeated handoffs between steps. Each handoff introduced another opportunity for distortion, inconsistency, or lost precision. 

Digital workflows changed that chain. 

CT scanning turned anatomy into data. Software allowed that data to be planned, designed, and adjusted in a digital environment. 3D printing made it possible to fabricate directly from that data, reducing the number of physical steps between the patient’s anatomy and the finished appliance. 

For a manufacturer, that is not just faster. It changes what is possible. 

It makes customization scalable because every case becomes a digital file rather than a hand-built one-off. It makes consistency more repeatable because the process is driven by data rather than by individual manual variation at every stage. It also opens the door to product categories that cannot exist without a digital foundation: software-driven treatment planning, in-house aligner manufacturing, printable dental materials, and direct-print appliances. 

In 2014, Park Dental Research put that foundation in place. 

The foundation for the next chapter 

The timing of what came after is the evidence. 

Once CT scanning and 3D printing became internal capabilities, Park Dental Research was positioned to move deeper into clear aligner manufacturing, digital treatment planning, printable materials, and direct-print systems. These later milestones did not appear from nowhere. They were built on the infrastructure decision made in 2014. 

That is why this milestone deserves a place in the company timeline. It was not the flashiest moment. It was not a single product announcement. But it explains much of what followed. 

The move into manufacturing aligners for multiple brands, the development of Orchestrate 3D™, the growth of the JUELL™ 3D printing line, and the later direct-print aligner workflow all required the same underlying shift: Park Dental Research had to become a digital manufacturing company, not just a company that used digital tools. 

That shift began here. 

The throughline 

The Park Dental Research story has always been about solving practical clinical and manufacturing problems with serious technical discipline. 

In the early implant era, that meant helping shape the prosthetic and engineering foundations of implant dentistry. In the mini dental implant era, it meant making implant stability more accessible through a minimally invasive protocol. In the digital era, it meant building the scanning, software, and 3D-printing infrastructure needed to produce modern dental appliances with greater control and consistency. 

The 2014 milestone belongs in that same pattern. 

It was the year Park Dental Research stopped treating digital dentistry as something outside the company and began making it part of the company’s own manufacturing DNA.
