By 2016, after bringing CT scanning services and 3D printing into its operation, Park Dental Research began OEM manufacturing clear aligners for multiple brands. It was not the company’s most visible milestone, because OEM work is not designed to be visible. That is the point. The manufacturer stands behind the brand, powering the process without necessarily appearing on the front of the box.
But strategically, this was one of the most important steps in Park Dental Research’s digital transformation.
It moved the company from having digital manufacturing capability to using that capability at scale.
What OEM manufacturing actually means
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) manufacturing is easy to misunderstand.
It does not mean simply making a generic product and putting someone else’s name on it. In clear aligners, the work is more complex than that. Every case is custom. Every appliance is tied to a patient’s anatomy, a clinician’s prescription, a treatment plan, a staged sequence of tooth movement, and a manufacturing process that has to repeat accurately across hundreds or thousands of individual aligners.
That kind of work requires more than production space.
It requires digital intake, treatment-planning support, and model creation. Thermoforming or printing workflows. Trimming, finishing, inspection, packaging, case tracking, and fulfillment. It also requires the discipline to do the same thing over and over again, case after case, without losing the precision that makes the appliance useful in the first place.
For a consumer brand, those are the hardest parts to build.
For Park Dental Research, they became a natural extension of the infrastructure already put in place.
Why 2016 mattered
The 2014 milestone gave Park Dental Research the foundation: CT scanning services, 3D printers, digital workflows, and the internal manufacturing mindset needed to produce custom dental appliances.
The 2016 milestone put that foundation to work.
Manufacturing clear aligners for multiple brands meant Park Dental Research was no longer just preparing for the digital dentistry era. It was operating inside it. The company was producing patient-specific orthodontic appliances at scale, supporting brands that needed manufacturing strength, technical reliability, and a production partner capable of handling custom cases in volume.
That shift changed the company’s role.
Park Dental Research was still an implant company with deep roots in the history of implant dentistry. But now it was also becoming something else: a behind-the-scenes manufacturing partner for the modern aligner market.
This is the quiet part of innovation. Not the launch. Not the headline. The system.
The timing was significant.
By the mid-2010s, clear aligners were moving beyond traditional orthodontic channels and into a much broader market. Patients were becoming more familiar with removable orthodontic appliances. Direct-to-consumer brands were gaining attention. Dentists and orthodontists were looking for ways to compete. New companies wanted to enter the category without building a full manufacturing operation from scratch.
That created demand for a different kind of partner.
Brands needed manufacturers that could manage the technical side while they focused on marketing, distribution, case acquisition, or clinical networks. Dental practices needed affordable aligner options that could help them keep treatment in-house instead of losing patients to mail-order competitors. The market was no longer only about who had the best brand. It was about who could deliver the workflow behind the brand.
Park Dental Research fit that moment because it had already made the hard infrastructure investment.
The company had digital capability. It had manufacturing experience. It had a history in regulated dental devices. It had already moved from analog production toward data-driven fabrication. OEM aligner manufacturing gave that capability a commercial engine.
From manufacturer to workflow partner
The deeper shift was not just that Park Dental Research made aligners.
It began to understand the aligner business as a workflow.
A clear aligner case starts long before fabrication. It starts with records, scans or impressions, patient photos, and a clinical goal. It then moves into digital setup, tooth movement planning, doctor review, approval, manufacturing, packaging, and delivery. If any one of those steps fails, the brand experience suffers, even if the aligner itself is well made.
That is why OEM work became so important to the company’s later direction.
It forced Park Dental Research to think beyond individual products and toward complete systems. The company was not only producing appliances. It was helping support the process that turned a submitted case into a finished treatment sequence.

The throughline is clear: the company kept moving toward more control over the full digital workflow.
The regulatory milestone that followed
The 2016 OEM milestone should not be confused with the later regulatory milestone.
Park Dental Research’s FDA-cleared aligner system came in 2019, when Park Dental Research Aligners received 510(k) clearance. That clearance documented the device as a sequential series of clear, thermoformed polyurethane plastic aligners designed to progressively reposition teeth through continuous gentle force.
That matters because it gives the story a public regulatory anchor.
The company began building OEM aligner manufacturing capability first. Then, as the digital aligner business matured, the cleared Park Dental Research Aligners system became part of the public record. The sequence is important: capability, manufacturing scale, regulatory documentation, then deeper workflow integration.
By the time Park Dental Research moved toward Orchestrate 3D™ and later DigiLine®, the company had already spent years inside the operational reality of aligner manufacturing.
The throughline
Park Dental Research’s history is usually told through visible milestones: implants, mini dental implants, CT scanning, 3D printing, software, direct-print aligners.
The 2016 OEM aligner milestone is different. It is the behind-the-scenes chapter.
It is the moment when Park Dental Research took the digital foundation it had built and began using it to power other brands. It learned the pressures of scale, the importance of workflow, and the discipline required to manufacture custom orthodontic appliances for a market that was growing quickly.
That experience mattered. It helped shape the company’s next digital moves. It made the case for deeper software integration. It helped set the stage for Park Dental Aligners, Orchestrate 3D™, and ultimately DigiLine®.
The brand on the box may not always have been Park Dental Research. But the manufacturing discipline behind the box became part of the company’s modern identity.
